Gandhi - My Father: A Review

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings have left an unforgettable lasting impression on national and international sphere. Renowned Film Director, Feroz Abbas Khan presents the most controversial image of Gandhiji in his next film “Gandhi-My Father. Mahatma Gandhi was not only a visionary or an idealist but a man full of practical commonsense. This is not the first time when a director has done such experiment through the medium of celluloid. Many foreign directors have also tried to understand the mystery that surrounds Gandhiji’s life.

He identified himself with the common man and tried to evolve solutions to the various evils that engulfed the society. A man of action, his whole life was a series of experiments to test his ideas about human persona. Hypothetically, you think that the camera is rolling very quickly. But still, in just about three hours it is almost impossible to make a sketch of Gandhiji’s character. If anybody tries to do this, then it is an unfinished task.

Director Feroz Abbas Khan has taken this project for Anil Kapur’s Films Company. Mr. Khan has already done another film on similar subject. It was “Mahatma Vs Gandhi”. The Bollywood Cinemas come up with huge budgets and a strong line up of casting. Actor, Akshaye Khanna is ready to show his talent of acting on this project. The actor gleefully accepted the offer in such a prestigious project and is determined to work wholeheartedly. He is not acting as Gandhi but as mystified elder son.  Darshan Jariwala is paying the role of Gandhi. The film is going to be ready for release in August.

Mr. Khan particularly emphasizes on the relation between the father and the son in the movie. May be some other aspects are also at play. Non-Violence is one of the supreme virtues of Gandhi. He said, “Freedom won by violent method was of no use”. The way he was shown in the film, create a controversy. Some of Gandhi’s devotees find it so distressing that they have written a petition against the film to the President and Prime Minister of India. One of the central characters, Harilal is genially associated to both the privet and public life of Mr. Gandhi.

He deeply believed in Gandhism. But his face was much unknown to the director. The term Satyagraha was coined by Gandhiji to indicate the nature of non-violent struggle conducted by him against the Government of South Africa for the protection of the right of his countryman settled there. In this way, he conquered hatred by love, untruth by truth and violence by suffering.  Other cast of the film is Bhoomika Chawla. She acts as Akshaye’s wife and a mother of a number of children. The director may be inspired by the famous book entitled “Harilal Gandhi: A life”. He has done a lot of homework, as he did in his previous works. He meets different people to ask them about Harilal. The filmmaker travels those spots where the history was hidden. Let’s hope that the audience will live in the history once again.
