JK Rowling And Harry Potter Fan Club - Double Bill

August 7th, 2007

It was really a double-bill week for Harry Potter’s fan-clubs around the world. On the one hand the much awaited “Harry Potter ‘The order of the Phoenix’” (based on the book No. 4) was released and on the other the majestic publishing of book No. 7- “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” marked a memorable week for Harry Potter fanatics. So, there were two enjoyable moments in the same week. Yes, it is a double-bill, isn’t it? Any book of the Harry Potter series is mind-blowing due to its style of storytelling capability of its conjurer author.

The author, JK Rowling and the film maker, David Yates try to present the same cup of tea in two different fashions. If you read the book No. 4 of Harry Potter series, and then decide to go to the cinemas to watch the movie “Harry Potter ‘The Order of the Phoenix’”, you will discover it more enjoyable than the original story. JK Rowling is a slow storyteller and director David Yates is faster. But it is not the only difference. There are two different types of trick and romances in these two different media – the book and the celluloid. Now the central character, Harry is much matured than other books.

The magician writer that she is, JK Rowling hardly shows any kind of magic in front of any knowledgeable audience. But her pen or old type-writer (whatever she likes for her writing) is doing all the business around the magical fairy-tale of Harry Potter. The book No- 7, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” is already read by millions of her fans. The online community dedicated to J.K Rowling and her Happy Potter has become hyper-active and are blogging everywhere – some times trying to cash in on the phenomenon by releasing some extracts and images from the Climax chapter. There are more than 400 such images of JK Rowling’s books and pages available on the Net. Hundreds of fans waited long hours in front of bookshops in London for the last minute bell of the Big Ben Clock on 21st July, 2007, when the book was all set for sale and they renounced the leakage by the bloggers through their huge purchase of the latest Harry Potter’s book. As it was the final book of Harry Potter‘s series, the fan clubs show all enthusiasm to mark the publication of the book No. 7.

In the meantime, the film “Harry Potter ‘The Order of the Phoenix’” has been smashing all the box-office records around the world. Now, Harry Potter’s fans can be found in every corner of the globe. The Harry Potter series did record business in India, China and Middle Eastern countries

But who is this JK Rowling who is creating waves around the world? Well, she is a British single mother who enchanted her little daughter by telling many fairytales in her bedroom. One day she decided to write those stories with her old type-writer and took a historic attempt to publish them for her soft-minded readers in an elastic manner. But all success doesn’t come spontaneously and so she had to struggle initially to find a publisher of her book. In the last book, the reader didn’t understand the reason why she intended to kill her main hero, Harry Potter. I think, for JK Rowling, Harry Potter is a duck that laid golden egg for her. May be she has faded up with a lot of moneys and fame, so she want a lay-off from writing. Website owners, photographers, columnists are all busy to write about JK Rowling. She has become one of the richest writers and famous international celebrities. It seems she is tired of the public life and looking to go back to her laidback life –that once bored her.

Anyway, even if she does not touch the pen again, she has already left her mark and a legacy that would be remembered for a long time to come.

Gandhi - My Father: A Review

July 19th, 2007

Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings have left an unforgettable lasting impression on national and international sphere. Renowned Film Director, Feroz Abbas Khan presents the most controversial image of Gandhiji in his next film “Gandhi-My Father. Mahatma Gandhi was not only a visionary or an idealist but a man full of practical commonsense. This is not the first time when a director has done such experiment through the medium of celluloid. Many foreign directors have also tried to understand the mystery that surrounds Gandhiji’s life.

He identified himself with the common man and tried to evolve solutions to the various evils that engulfed the society. A man of action, his whole life was a series of experiments to test his ideas about human persona. Hypothetically, you think that the camera is rolling very quickly. But still, in just about three hours it is almost impossible to make a sketch of Gandhiji’s character. If anybody tries to do this, then it is an unfinished task.

Director Feroz Abbas Khan has taken this project for Anil Kapur’s Films Company. Mr. Khan has already done another film on similar subject. It was “Mahatma Vs Gandhi”. The Bollywood Cinemas come up with huge budgets and a strong line up of casting. Actor, Akshaye Khanna is ready to show his talent of acting on this project. The actor gleefully accepted the offer in such a prestigious project and is determined to work wholeheartedly. He is not acting as Gandhi but as mystified elder son.  Darshan Jariwala is paying the role of Gandhi. The film is going to be ready for release in August.

Mr. Khan particularly emphasizes on the relation between the father and the son in the movie. May be some other aspects are also at play. Non-Violence is one of the supreme virtues of Gandhi. He said, “Freedom won by violent method was of no use”. The way he was shown in the film, create a controversy. Some of Gandhi’s devotees find it so distressing that they have written a petition against the film to the President and Prime Minister of India. One of the central characters, Harilal is genially associated to both the privet and public life of Mr. Gandhi.

He deeply believed in Gandhism. But his face was much unknown to the director. The term Satyagraha was coined by Gandhiji to indicate the nature of non-violent struggle conducted by him against the Government of South Africa for the protection of the right of his countryman settled there. In this way, he conquered hatred by love, untruth by truth and violence by suffering.  Other cast of the film is Bhoomika Chawla. She acts as Akshaye’s wife and a mother of a number of children. The director may be inspired by the famous book entitled “Harilal Gandhi: A life”. He has done a lot of homework, as he did in his previous works. He meets different people to ask them about Harilal. The filmmaker travels those spots where the history was hidden. Let’s hope that the audience will live in the history once again.
