Authority Web Directories
Many webmasters are fascinated with Authority sites. But it is not easy to define an authority site!
Without going into lengthy details - I would like to illustrate them with pictorial evidence.
From the above picture we can see that - Google is showing four (4) deep-links or sub-pages along with the main URL of XOOPS - the parent site of Object Oriented content management system. This means that Google recognizes this website as the authority in its niche. It is the ultimate website when it comes to everything related to content management using XOOPS.
While its all speculative when it comes to how Google awards Page Rank, SERPs or other status to websites, the consensus belief is that - a site has to getreference links from majority of websites in its niche, it has to get reference links from other authority websites, it has to be content rich and be online for a sizeable period of time without doing anything that Google deems illegal. Based on these factors Google, awards its ultimate recognition, the Authority Status to an established website.
Authority Web Directories
Today, there are seemingly thousands of human edited web directories online catering to hundreds of thousands of websites coming up every year. This phenomenon has been result of the creation of Open Directory Projec (ODP) or DMOZ. Google’s search algorythm or Google Technology that is mainly based on votes (inbound links) by other sites has also contributed to the growth of human edited web directories to provide webmasters a jump-start to their newly launched websites by helping them to get indexed quickly by Search Engines.

Just a quick question: With www.stpt.com having such a high PR of 8 and being a directory. Do you have an idea why it has not become an authority directory? Does PR outweigh Authority?
August 8th, 2007 at 11:36 pm
PR has nothing to do with authority - thats what I believe - personally.
I have seen PR3 authority site and also PR9 non- authority site. I believe - they are totally different algo.
As to why Starting Point is not an authority - I don’t know why. LII.ORG is another high PR directory that is not an authority.

Hi Uttoran
Thanks for your recommendation of V7N Directory. But I have checked again and again –and could not veryfy for which term, or URL it has become authority. I know its main site V7N is an authority site. But the directory is a sub-url.
Can you please help me verify it so that I can gladly add it on my list!

How can DMOZ be considered an authority directory when it never seems to be updated?
Inclusion in DMOZ is nearly impossible for new sites with unique content, but scrapper sites owned by the volunteer editors get listed quickly.
DMOZ is not an authority on anything these days,

The term for those “deep links” in the SERP is “Snippet”….not “Authority Sites”
I found this post amusing considering the lack of basic knowledge on the subject.
January 8th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Hi Dito -
Thanks for your comment. Actually, I also find your comment amusing when you call those extra links as “deep links” whereas officially they are called “site-links” on Google webmaster central.
On calling these sites with “site-links” as authority sites - please do a little bit of research on what is known as “Authority-Score” and what is known as Hub-Score”.

Looks like Romow.com is joining the sitelink club.
February 27th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Yes Peter - You are right. Romow along with a host of others like ” gii.in ” “umdum” “elib” etc. is certainly joining directories with sitelinks.
I am updating my list of directories with sitelinks–and it seems there are quite a lot. I’ll write a new post rather than updating this list on directories with sitelinks.

John
